These photos come from a series that I created in Prospect Park in Brooklyn NY over the past two years. Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s version of Central Park. Like Central Park, it was designed by Olmstead and Vaux, and they considered Prospect Park to be their masterpiece. It has a more pastoral feel than Central Park, with woods and lakes and rolling meadows. The wooded areas have been called the last forest in Brooklyn. The park covers about 750 acres, and is bordered by several neighborhoods that are widely varied in class and race. In Prospect Park these diverse neighbors meet. The images were taken on color film with a Mamiya 6 camera and are edited from a body of over four thousand photos. My method has been to visit the park every day for several hours and photograph anything that catches my eye. I then edit the photos into a cohesive line. In this edit, I’ve collected odd and beautiful moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. I focus on the people that visit and the things they leave behind. I try to bring a sympathetic eye to the detritus of the park. |
